It's easy to see how they steal our hearts with those long ears, sad, brown eyes, and huge paws.
Bassets were originally bred in France to be the perfect dog for rabbit hunting because their short legs made it easy for them to run through the bushy countryside. Their name derived from the French word "bas" meaning low. The basset scent of smell and ability to "ground scent" is second only to the Bloodhound.
They are known for their gentle disposition, friendliness, and lazy demeanor, but they can also be bossy, demanding, and stubborn.
They absolutely love food! Bassests can have a stubborn streak, but since they are so food-motivated, they are best trained with patience and lots of treats.
The downside of owning a Basset is that they don't make good jogging companions ;)
On a positive note, they are quiet, calm and low-maintenance. They are happy letting small children climb on them and love to make friends with other pets!
Overall, Bassets are a low-maintence pet, but here are a few helpful tips to keep a Basset healthy!
Since Bassets are so low-key, they make a pleasant addition to many kinds of families. They are happy on both a farm in the country and in an apartment in the city.
